She was born on October 15, 1944, in Camden, Alabama, US, as Kay Ellen Ivey.

Her father worked with the Gees Bend community.

Growing up in Camden, Ivey never dreamed of politics.

“Our family raised cattle, and I remember watching my grandmother churn butter,” she said about her childhood.

In 1967, Kay graduated from Auburn University. During college, she was involved in campus political organizations.

After college, Ivey had a brief career as a teacher and banker.

In 1979, Kay left the bank to serve in Gov. Fob James’ cabinet.

From 1980 to 1982, Ivey served as a reading clerk in the Alabama House of Representatives.

From 1982 to 1985, she was an assistant director of the Alabama Development Office. For the next three years, Ivey was the director of governmental affairs.

In 2002, Kay became an elected state treasurer since Reconstruction. Ivey was re-elected in 2006 by a 60–40% margin. She served in this position until 2011 (Kay was not eligible to seek reelection to a third term).

In 2010, Ivey was elected lieutenant governor.

In 2015, Kay Ivey was the recipient of the ALFA Service to Agriculture Award.
