Mark Harmon, the longstanding face of NCIS, celebrated a momentous milestone as he marked his 400th episode portraying Leroy Gibbs. Harmon has been a constant presence since the show’s inception in 2003, also taking on the role of executive producer.
In a special twist for the 400th episode, titled “Everything Starts Somewhere,” the narrative journeyed back in time to 1980, unraveling the meeting of Gibbs and Donald “Ducky” Mallard. Harmon’s son, Sean, stepped into the shoes of a young Gibbs in this significant episode, a moment of pride for the 69-year-old actor.
The storyline harks back four decades, depicting a case that initially brought Gibbs and Ducky together. This plotline delves into a cr1me scene involving a civilian accountant with LEOPARD syndrome, employed by the Department of Defense. Tragically, the accountant succumbs to his injuries after a car accident, leading to the discovery of a cash bag and a revolver in his vehicle, along with the surprising presence of Sergeant Gibbs in the trunk. This fateful encounter introduces Gibbs to both NIS and the Zucados cr1me family.
A driving mistake on Ducky’s part ultimately saves Gibbs’ life. As a gesture of gratitude, Gibbs treats Ducky to a drink at various bars over three consecutive days. The two eventually cross paths with the Zucado family before parting ways, leaving a heartfelt exchange between Gibbs and Ducky.
Reflecting on this milestone, Harmon expressed confidence in the episode’s reception by the audience. He acknowledged that the flashback-heavy narrative was conceived in collaboration with co-showrunner Steven Binder, especially resonating with long-time fans of the show and its beloved characters.
Harmon also spoke fondly of his son Sean’s involvement in the historic episode. He recalled the initial discussion about casting a young Gibbs when Sean had just finished high school. Harmon emphasized his pride in Sean’s dedication to the craft of acting, applauding the earnest approach both of his sons take to their pursuits.
In addition to his professional achievements, Harmon shared the pride he and his wife, actress Pam Dawber, feel for their sons. He emphasized the importance of recognizing people beyond their on-screen personas, appreciating them as individuals and citizens. Harmon concluded by expressing his hope that both of his sons continue to make wise decisions and take pride in their endeavors, including Sean’s significant role in NCIS.
